We are Open And Affirming

Led by the Holy Spirit, we pray that we will exemplify Christian faith in our community as we welcome all into the wholeness of God’s love. We are called to live our vision,  “living in God’s love together.” Led by the Holy Spirit and the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, we commit ourselves to inclusiveness. We extend our welcome to persons of every race; ethnicity; age; gender; sexual orientation - including gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons; physical or mental ability; economic or marital status; and faith background.  We affirm our  commitment by extending the rights, privileges, sacraments, duties, and obligations of church membership to all.

We are a Congregation of the United Church Of  Christ ...
A Church of Firsts!

Since 1957, the United Church of Christ has been the church of firsts, weaving God’s message of hope and extravagant welcome with action for justice and peace. Together, we live out our faith in ways that effect change in our communities.  The UCC's many "firsts" mean that we have inherited a tradition of acting upon the demands of our faith.  When we read in Galatians: "There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus"—a demand is made upon us.  And so we were the first predominantly white denomination to ordain an African-American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first mainline Protestant church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were in the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement.  Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.

OUR STAFF

At UCC East Goshen

Our Pastor, The Rev. Angelee Benner-Smith, has served UCC East Goshen since 1993.

Caroline Dunleavy, UCC East Goshen's Director of Music Ministry,  is living proof  that creative gifts and a head for figures are not mutually exclusive.  Caroline inspires our musicians to share the good news in song every week.

Phyllis Kinser, Administrative Assistant, is the hospitable voice answering the phone, as she works through the weekly needs of the congregation.

Where we've come from ...

Unlike many of the UCC congregations in the area,  we don't trace our ancestry to German immigrants in the 1700s.  UCC East Goshen was a new church start in the West Chester area in the 70's.  Rev. Benner-Smith is the fourth pastor to serve here.

During her ministry, our building took the shape that you see on the home page.  We added an airy, open sanctuary in 2000 and more classrooms and meeting space a few years ago.

"That they may all be one."
